Oklahoma's Cole urges Trump to avoid political pick for Federal Bureau of Investigation

Sen. Cornyn, Judge Garland not interested in FBI job

After Trump fired Comey last week amid the FBI's investigation, Cornyn said it was "within his authority" to do so.

On the Democratic side, U.S. Rep. Beto O'Rourke of El Paso is already running to challenge Cruz, but if Cornyn's seat were up, he could first run for that and still run against Cruz if he doesn't win.

Interviews, to be conducted by Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, are apparently being planned for Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, Republican senator John Cornyn, former assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's criminal division Alice Fisher, and former U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia.

Rogers was a former FBI special agent and chairman of the House intelligence committee before becoming a CNN national security commentator and has the endorsement of the FBI Agents Association. You may recall that McConnell blocked a confirmation vote on Garland's appointment by then-President Obama to the Supreme Court a year ago.

Trump is also reported to be considering other law enforcement professionals including former New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly who served under Mayor Rudy Giuliani during the 9/11 attack.

"I have the distinct privilege of serving 28 million Texans in the United States Senate, and that is where my focus remains", Cornyn, who is majority whip in the Senate, said in the statement.

Cornyn is the second-ranking Senate Republican and has been more vocal in his support of Trump in recent weeks.

Trump's sudden removal of Comey from the position this week set off a political firestorm in Washington, furling fears that the president was trying to stifle the bureau's probe into possible coordination between his campaign and Russian Federation to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

Mackowiak said that whomever Trump nominates will likely be confirmed "in the 51- to 54-vote range" because of the fallout after Comey's dismissal, and that the president can not nominate a loyalist like former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani to the post.

A statement released by university spokesman Kendrick Callis said commencement speaker Sen.

Cornyn also miffed Democrats earlier this year by resisting calls for a special counsel to investigate the Trump/Russia claims. Now more than ever the country needs a well-credentialed, independent FBI Director.

Then there is the fact that Cornyn's across-the-aisle friend, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, said Democrats will not support confirming a new Federal Bureau of Investigation leader unless a special investigator is appointed to look into Trump's connections to Russian. The odds look high that John Cornyn will continue to serve Texas in the Senate.
