The announcement was targeted at developers who make skills for Alexa and includes instructions for how developers can modify their apps to be ready for users.
This functionality will require developers to use new tools that Amazon announced on Tuesday, including the Alexa Voice Service and Alexa Skills Kit, which will be available soon. They won't receive any notifications from skills that they've not allowed to send them notifications.
Notifications will be opt-in, so don't worry about your Echo devices all of a sudden buzzing at you with unwanted info. "Users can simply ask, 'Alexa, what did I miss?' or 'Alexa, what are my notifications?'"
It will be interesting to see how developers use this feature in the future. The ability to make phone calls and send messages with an Alexa-enabled device was made available last week. This is pretty useful as this also means that the Echo will not be ruining the ambiance of your house on its own by yelling out news all the time.
