"As for the source of these threats, Microsoft's leadership stated this directly, they said the source of the virus was the special services of the United States", Putin said.

"The company clarifies that its networks and systems were not affected, thank God, and further that what was shown in the media relates to some personal devices which specialised technical teams will address", Saudi Arabia's biggest telecoms operator said in a statement on Sunday.

In a blog post on Sunday, Microsoft President Brad Smith appeared to acknowledge that the ransomware attack used a hacking tool built by the US National Security Agency which leaked online in April.

The computing giant said software vulnerabilities hoarded by governments had caused "widespread damage", the BBC reported.

It compared it to the USA military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen.

"The governments of the world should treat this attack as a wake-up call", Smith wrote while also noting how "cybersecurity has become a shared responsibility between tech companies and customers".

But global fears eased on Monday as the number of incidents reported levelled off.

The National Health Service (NHS) warns of a day of chaos as doctors return to work and switch on their ransomware-infected computers.

Victims were asked for payment of $300 in the virtual currency Bitcoin. The radio said the factory is working with the central office in France to resolve the problem.

Becky Pinkard, from Digital Shadows, a UK-based cyber-security firm, revealed it would be easy for the initial attackers or "copy-cat authors" to change the virus code so it is hard to guard against.

Labour's shadow health secretary, Jonathan Ashworth, in a letter to Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, said concerns were repeatedly flagged about outdated computer systems.

"This was like a weapon of mass destruction compared to previous ransomware because it was able to spread on its own, very quickly, over a vulnerability that was largely unpatched".

European Union cyber security expert, Robert Pritchard said he believed criminal gangs were responsible for the virus, and said they were unlikely to be caught.
