Trump considering numerous candidates for FBI director
Comey, who was sacked by President Donald Trump on Tuesday, was invited to speak before the committee in a closed session.
On Friday morning, as President Trump faced withering scrutiny for his decision to fire the FBI director while his campaign is under FBI investigation, Trump took to Twitter to reiterate the talking point he deploys whenever the topic of his campaign's possible collusion with Russian Federation comes up. During the March 20 House hearing where he confirmed the Trump campaign is the subject of a counterintelligence investigation, Comey said, "I've been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the FBI, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election".
Trump has claimed that Comey told him on all three occasions that he wasn't personally under investigation.
It was unclear whether Mr Trump's reference to "tapes" suggested there might be secret recordings of conversations that could be used to challenge any statements by Mr Comey, or whether it was simply a way of warding him off from commenting.
He then went on Twitter to say that "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"
The issue of "perfect accuracy"- like so many other topics - came up during the daily press briefing because Trump had tweeted about it earlier in the day.
Trump told NBC's Lester Holt on Thursday Comey had requested the dinner on January 27, because the wanted to stay on as Federal Bureau of Investigation director. "That would be flawless".
Mr Comey's successor, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, said on Thursday that it remained "a highly significant investigation". That's according to two people familiar with the search process who weren't authorized to publicly discuss the deliberations and spoke on condition of anonymity.

UK Conservatives gain in local election; Labour, UKIP sink The party courted controversy during its campaign with suggestions it would ban the burka, a covering worn by some Muslim women. But he also admitted Labour needs to be more effective at cutting through the press in the build up to the general election.
Melissa McCarthy adds spice (and Spicer) as host of 'SNL' There's a fear that comedy will minimize the grave risks Trump poses to America - at least as seen by those who oppose him. McCarthy's "Spicey" could be seen peering in from outside the White House looking confused and distraught.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders disputed the report and said the president would "never even suggest the expectation of personal loyalty".
As in Friday's briefing, Spicer refused to commit when asked if the White House would keep the daily briefing.
"Yes, that's true", Trump said.
Even before Trump's provocative tweet, the White House was scrambling to clarify why Comey was sacked.
"Having regular press briefings is key to giving journalists the ability to do their jobs", Mason said.
As part of the Russian Federation investigation, the Justice Department last month requested former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's banking records, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer wouldn't say whether Trump is recording people. The comment to NBC News conflicts with Trump's explanation to members of Congress earlier in the week that he dismissed Comey at the recommendation of the Justice Department, which cited the FBI director's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while secretary of state as the reason he should be fired.
Already Mr Trump's decision appears to have emboldened the Senate intelligence committee investigating Russia's election interference and the president's associates, with lawmakers announcing a subpoena for former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
REENACTMENT: Trump fires Comey, Spicer hides among the hedges
It seems to me that you're playing a very unsafe game with the currency of the credibility of the President of the United States. There was some talk as Trump took office that his administration would do things differently and cut back on press access.

Alonso managed 21 laps in the afternoon - the fewest and slowest of all. "I like this F1", he said of the new breed of machinery. Fernando Alonso's Spaniard McLaren-Honda still suffered a major breakdown in the free practice of the Spanish GP today.
